Antagonic effect of the inhibition of inducible nitric oxide on the mortality of mice acutely infected with Escherichia coli and Bacteroides fragilis BJMBR
Astolfi,R.S.; Khouri,D.G.; Brandizzi,L.I.V.; Ávila-Campos,M.J.; Andrade Jr.,H.F. de.
Sepsis, the leading cause of death in intensive care units, is associated with overproduction of nitric oxide (NO) due to inducible NO synthase (iNOS), responsible for some of the pathologic changes. Aminoguanidine (AG) is a selective iNOS inhibitor with reported inconsistent actions in sepsis. To investigate the influence of iNOS, we studied models of acute bacterial sepsis using acute challenges with aerobic (Escherichia coli) and anaerobic (Bacteroides fragilis) bacteria in the presence of AG. Six-week-old, 23 g, male and female BALB/c and C57Bl/6j mice, in equal proportions, were inoculated (ip) with bacteria in groups of 4 animals for each dose and each experiment in the absence or presence of AG (50 mg/kg, ip, starting 24 h before challenge and daily...

Chromosomal effects of infections in malnourished and eutrophic children of Gran La Plata JBAG
Padula,G; Seoane,A.
The aim of this study was to assess the induction of structural chromosomal aberrations in peripheral blood lymphocytes of malnourished and eutrophic children with bacterial infections. Thirty-six infants concurrent to the Hospital Interzonal de Agudos y Crónicos Dr. Alejandro Korn, La Plata, Argentina were included in this analysis; 11 infected and malnourished (IM), 7 infected and eutrophic (IE) and 18 non-infected and eutrophic (NE). Children aged 1-60 months. Anthropometric and clinic evaluation were performed to assess nutritional condition. We scored structural chromosome aberrations (SCA) in 100 metaphases per individual. Statistical analysis was performed by the Epi Dat 3.0 (OPS-OMS, 2003), through «Test de Diferencias entre dos proporciones...

Comparative study of bacterial infection prevalence between cirrhotic patients with and without upper gastrointestinal bleeding BJID
Almeida,Delvone; Lopes,Antônio A; Santos-Jesus,Rogerio; Paes,Igelmar; Bittencourt,Helito; Paraná,Raymundo.
Bacterial infection is a frequent complication in patients with chronic liver disease, mainly during the advanced stages. There is evidence that the main factors that contribute to a predisposition to infection in cirrhotic patients are related to hepatic failure with consequent immunodeficiency. Invasive procedures (diagnostic or therapeutic) can predispose to bacterial infections, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGB) is considered a potentially important risk factor. A group of cirrhotic patients (child B and C Pugh groups ) were evaluated retrospectively by chart reviews regarding the prevalence of bacterial infection during hospitalization to determine whether UGB was a risk factor. An infection was considered present if a specific organ system...

Current aspects of antibiotic prophylaxis for upper gastrointestinal bleeding in cirrhosis patients BJID
Almeida,Delvone; Paraná,Raymundo.
Bacterial infection is a common complication in cirrhotic patients. The portal hypertension as well as the immune depression observed in these patients can explain this high incidence of bacterial infection. Because of the high probability of cirrhotic patients to develop infections, antibiotic prophylaxis is warranted in some conditions, such as upper gastrointestinal bleeding or after spontaneous bacterial peritonitis. Nevertheless, antibiotic prophylaxis is not widely recommended for cirrhotic patients.

First evidence for a Vibrio strain pathogenic to Mytilus edulis altering hemocyte immune capacities ArchiMer
Ben Cheikh, Yosra; Travers, Marie-agnes; Morga, Benjamin; Godfrin, Yoann; Rioult, Damien; Le Foll, Franck.
Bacterial isolates were obtained from mortality events affecting Mytilus edulis and reported by professionals in 2010-2013 or from mussel microflora. Experimental infections allowed the selection of two isolates affiliated to V. splendidus/V. hemicentroti type strains: a virulent 10/068 1T1 (76,6% and 90% mortalities in 24h and 96h) and an innocuous 12/056 M24T1 (0% and 23,3% in 24h and 96h). These two strains were GFP-tagged and validated for their growth characteristics and virulence as genuine models for exposure. Then, host cellular immune responses to the microbial invaders were assessed. In the presence of the virulent strain, hemocyte motility was instantaneously enhanced but markedly slowed down after 2h exposure. By contrast, hemocyte velocity...

Incidência de brucelose bovina no município de Rio Branco-Acre. Infoteca-e

Safety and efficacy of a novel drug elores (ceftriaxone + sulbactam + disodium edetate) in the management of multi-drug resistant bacterial infections in tertiary care centers: a post-marketing surveillance study BJID
Chaudhary,Manu; Mir,Mohd Amin; Ayub,Shiekh Gazalla.
Abstract Objective: In India, Elores (CSE-1034: ceftriaxone + sulbactam + disodium edetate) was approved as a broad spectrum antibiotic in year 2011 and is used for management of Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases/Metallo Beta lactamases infections in tertiary care centers. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of this drug in patients with Extended Spectrum Beta Lactamases/Metallo Beta lactamases infections and identify the incidence of adverse events in real clinical settings. Methods: This Post Marketing Surveillance study was conducted at 17 centers across India and included 2500 patients of all age groups suffering from various bacterial infections and treated with Elores (CSE1034). Information regarding demographic, clinical...

Vertebral Osteomyelitis in Broilers: A Review Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Avic.
Braga,JFV; Martins,NRS; Ecco,R.
ABSTRACT Locomotor diseases are still a challenge in modern poultry. Vertebral osteomyelitis (VO) is an emerging disease in broilers worldwide. The inflammatory process in the affected thoracic vertebra (T4) and subsequent spinal cord compression leads to clinical signs related to locomotor impairment, inadequate feeding and drinking, and increased mortality in the affected flocks. The pathogenesis of the disease is poorly understood and Enterococcus cecorum is the bacterium most frequently associated with the disease. However, other bacteria such as E. faecalis, E. durans, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus have been recently detected in cases of the disease, raising questions regarding its etiopathogenesis. As many questions about VO in broilers...
